Phosphorus-fields nearby had played a big role in the development of Maardu as an industrial town. Now the phosphorus mining has been stopped because it is considered to be economically inexpedient. There have left many industrial apartments and labour power, which is necessary to find an exertion for.

Maardu town connects its industrial prospects with the development of Muuga Harbour, called trading gate to Europe, with a building of new terminals, with the construction of new berths, with transit trade. It will give new jobs, the development of the industrial infrastructure, the opportunity to enlist foreign investments.

An extensive free zone in Muuga Harbour grants more flexible customs procedures for companies rendering transit.
